23-12-1 MYANMAR | A Rebel Victory? - Prof J K-L > .

British Burma (1885-1948): In the 19th century, Burmese rulers, whose country had not previously been of particular interest to European traders, sought to maintain their traditional influence in the western areas of Assam, Manipur and Arakan. Pressing them, however, was the British East India Company, which was expanding its interests eastwards over the same territory. Over the next sixty years, diplomacy, raids, treaties and compromises, known collectively as the Anglo-Burmese Wars, continued until Britain proclaimed control over most of Burma. With the fall of Mandalay, all of Burma came under British rule, being annexed on 1 January 1886.

Geostrategic Projection
European Geostrategic Projection ..

Both quality and quantity increase in Polish military capabilities are simply necessary, as after putting a stop to military draft in early 2000s Polish army failed to maintain the proper number of military reserve personel, while most military analysts I've encountered agree that we would require at least additional one or two divisions to hold against Russia (and double of our current air forces on top of that). The people ending their military contracts are moved into reserve, there was a recent establishment of a semi-proffesional "National Guard"-like Territorial Defence Forces few years ago and there were/are some training programs for military reserve, but as we Poles say it is a single drop of water in a sea of demands. It is also no secret that a lot of our military hardware is either late soviet or post-soviet era, and might have been decent in 1990s, but definitely is not right now (for example, majority of our mechanized infantry still uses BMP-1 for f***s sake!), with major gaps in, for example, medium and long-range anti-air. Our military industry has managed to step up to the task and modernize some things (while hopelessly failing in others), but lack of common vision for military between changing governments in the last two decades has resulted in a lot of crippled modernization programs, wasted resources, and in many cases somewhat random foreign purchases often driven more by foreign policy than demands of military. Add the fact that due to above issues both the question of small number and lack of proper modern equipment can be leveraged in the endless fight between current government and the main political opposition (being ones responsible for ending the draft and basically ceasing modernization for good four or five years despite having all the funds needed).
