23-6-11 Think Ukraine’s Offensive Has Started? Wait for the Heavy Brigades by Ben Hodges . "Some have dated the start of this campaign to June 4, two days before Russia’s sabotage of the Kakhovka Dam on the Dnipro River on June 6. That was likely the moment when General Valerii Zaluzhny, the UAF commander-in-chief, decided — in my view — that his three preconditions had been met and that he could therefore give the green light. He would have asked:
  • Is there enough combat power (armored brigades with tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, engineers, artillery, air defense and logistics) to be able to penetrate the Russian linear defenses and achieve their assigned tasks, which probably includes cutting the “land bridge” from Russia to Crimea, and also securing the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant?;
  • Have Russian defenses and logistics been sufficiently degraded; has the Russian rear area and transportation network been adequately disrupted; and are the Russian leadership confused enough as to the aim and timings of the UAF offensive?; and
  • Is the ground dry enough to support the movement of hundreds of heavy, tracked, armored vehicles?"

How Victory In Europe Day Unfolded | VE Day | Timeline > .
A series of actions by the Nazis against French political prisoners and members of the French Resistance had previously sparked mass civil unrest. This began on 15 August and climaxed three days later with a general strike. However, having been ruled by the Nazis for over four years, the liberation of the capital was not a priority for the forces under General Dwight D. Eisenhower. Furthermore, the Allied commanders were unwilling to risk the destruction of the city since they were aware that Hitler had said it ‘must not fall into the enemy's hand except lying in complete debris.’

Having received reports that the US Third Army led by General Patton was close to Paris, but unaware that they did not intend to attack the city Von Choltitz, the Nazi military governor, ordered explosives to be placed at strategic points. The Nazis never had the chance to detonate them.

The German military withdrew down the Champs Élysées on the morning of 19 August. At this point the French Forces of the Interior, otherwise known as the French resistance, seized the opportunity to begin a full-scale uprising. Barricades were erected the next day, with fighting reaching a peak three days later. It was this that persuaded Eisenhower to change his plan and allow Allied troops to enter Paris.

Over 800 resistance fighters died before the Free French 2nd Armoured Division led by Captain Raymond Dronne arrived to assist the uprising just before midnight on 24 August. On 25 August the US 4th Infantry Division entered the city. General Charles de Gaulle, the head of the Free French Forces and a symbol of hope to his countrymen, led a triumphant parade down the Champs Élysées. Von Choltitz surrendered later that day.

Pobedobesie (победобесие, 'victory frenzy, victory mania or obsession with victory') is a pejorative term used to describe the "hyperbolic celebrations" of Victory Day in Russia. This has been dubbed the Victory Cult. The term has been extended to refer to the weaponization of the legacy of World War II to justify Russia's aggressive policies and an increase of militarism, using the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany for p00paganda purposes.

Domino Theory - Communism

.

By the middle of the 1950s American fears of the global spread of communism were being realized. In China the Communist Party had taken control, while the Korean War had ended with an armistice that split the country in two and with a communist in the government in the north. In Indochina, better known as Vietnam, France had struggled to regain colonial control in the aftermath of the Second World War. By 1954 they were facing imminent defeat against the Vietnamese nationalists under communist Ho Chi Minh, something that the American government feared would provide communism with a springboard into Southeast Asia.

America had already adopted the Truman Doctrine, in which it committed to support anti-communist groups, and at a news conference on 7 April 1954 Eisenhower laid the groundwork for US involvement in Vietnam. He began by explaining how the country held economic importance for America, and how there was the threat of a dictatorial takeover. He concluded his argument by explaining what he called the ‘falling domino principle’ in which he likened the spread of communism in Southeast Asia to a row of dominoes quickly collapsing after the first one falls.

Within a month of the news conference French forces had lost the Battle of Dien Bien Phu and, at the subsequent Geneva Conference, they agreed to leave Vietnam and divide the country at the 17th parallel. Although Eisenhower’s speech consequently had little immediate effect, it laid the foundations for America’s later involvement in Vietnam as both John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson used the domino theory to justify their intervention.

Women in Combat - UK

Flight Lieutenant Julie Ann Gibson was the first full-time female pilot for the Royal Air Force when she graduated in 1991. Previously a ground-based officer, she learnt to fly while attending City, University of London. She was subsequently assigned to No. 32 Squadron RAF flying Hawker Siddeley Andovers, and following her promotion to Captain, Lockheed C-130 Hercules at RAF Lyneham.

She attended the City, University of London, where she graduated in 1983 with a Bachelor of Science degree in aeronautical engineering. While at University, she had learnt to fly and had joined the associated University Air Squadron.

Gibson joined the Royal Air Force College in 1984, and following her officer training, she was posted to RAF Honington in Suffolk. She was initially in charge of 75 engineers. In the following assignment, she commanded 160 men in the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II tactical weapons unit. Alongside fellow female pilot Sally Cox, Gibson took her first solo flights in 1990 at RAF Linton-on-Ouse. She successfully applied for pilot training, going on to train in the Advanced Flying Training Wing. She graduated as the first female pilot in the RAF on 14 June 1991 at No. 6 Flying Training School RAF, within RAF Finningley. She was assigned to No. 32 Squadron RAF, where she flew Hawker Siddeley Andovers out of RAF Northolt. She was subsequently promoted to Flight Lieutenant, and assigned to fly Lockheed C-130 Hercules at RAF Lyneham.

Joanna Mary Salter (born 27 August 1968, in Bournemouth) was Britain's first female fast jet pilot flying the Panavia Tornado ground attack aircraft with 617 Squadron, she later became an inspirational speaker.

Salter joined the Royal Air Force at the age of 18 with the intention of becoming an engineering officer but she went on to train as a pilot after the British government announced that women would be allowed to fly jet aircraft in 1992. As part of her engineering training she had studied at the Royal Military College of Science. Salter was awarded her wings on 3 April 1992 and at the end of 1992 she finished her fast jet training at RAF Brawdy with Dawn Hadlow (nee Bradley), who became Britain's first RAF female flight instructor.

In August 1994 Salter joined 617 Squadron at RAF Lossiemouth in August 1994 as a flight lieutenant, and was declared "combat ready" by the RAF on 21 February 1995. Salter was the first woman to be an operational Tornado pilot and she later flew from both Turkey and Saudi Arabia in protection of the no-fly zone over Iraq. Whilst flying ground attack Tornados, Salter started an MBA course with the Open University in 1996, being sponsored by the MoD, she completed the course in 1999.

Beware Dragons

20-9-29 Leading Chinese dissident, the artist and filmmaker Ai Weiwei, says China's influence has become so great that it can't now be effectively stopped.

"The West should really have worried about China decades ago. Now it's already a bit too late, because the West has built its strong system in China and to simply cut it off, it will hurt deeply. That's why China is very arrogant."

Ai Weiwei has never minced his words about China. "It is a police state," he says.

---

First, the U.S. is — rightly — no longer willing to accept China’s unfair trade restrictions on importing of U.S. goods and its stealing of the intellectual property of U.S. firms — something the U.S. tolerated for many years before China became a technology powerhouse.

And second, now that China is a technology powerhouse — and technological products all have both economic and military applications, unlike the toys, T-shirts and tennis shoes that used to dominate China-U.S. trade — the two sides are struggling to figure out what to buy and sell from and to each other, without damaging their national security. The ripping sound you hear is the sound of two giant economies starting to decouple ⇒ possibility that the integration of global innovation ecosystems will collapse as a result of mutual efforts by the United States and China to exclude one another.

And now that tear is moving to people. Since June 11, the State Department has been restricting visas for Chinese graduate students studying in sensitive fields — like aviation, robotics and advanced manufacturing — to one year, instead of five years. There has also been a crackdown on Chinese investments in anything close to American infrastructure or military-related industries.

Many of those who do go abroad now prefer Canada and Australia over America. The  U.S. will pay a price for that over time.

This decoupling is not all Idiot-in-Chief’s fault — not by a long shot. China’s president, Xi Jinping, also overplayed his hand, taking over islands in the South China Sea, announcing plans to invest massive amounts so China can dominate critical technologies of the 21st century, and worse, tightening Communist Party rule over Hong Kong and horrendously sending Muslims in Western China to “re-education” camps. He’s also resisting pressures to reduce China’s most abusive trade practices.

The country benefited tremendously from the globalization system that the U.S. and its allies built since World War II, but Beijing has often been grudging about making any sacrifices to maintain it.

"Today’s geopolitics centers around China, the United States, Russia, and Ukraine. China’s role in the Russia-Ukraine conflict has become the focal point of international affairs. China-Russia and China-US relations are of great concern to the world—all eyes are watching. More than 70 years ago, the interactions between Mao Zedong, Joseph Stalin, and Kim Il-sung during the Korean War gave us insight into current geopolitical dynamics as history may likely repeat itself. As the risk of war in the Taiwan Strait looms, we want to understand CCP leaders’ motivation for war and their relations with China’s Russian big brother."

Repressive Authoritarianism - China

.

Those whose policies are anathema to society MUST resort to repressive, authoritarian control. Analogous to the negative impacts of authoritarian parenting styles, the result is a dissatisfied society dominated by nervous, creativity-impaired, functionally-incompetent, petty officials. A formula for stagnation or regression, not long-term success.

Ex-SS soldiers and militant Jews. Communists and monarchists. Atheists and Catholics. The Lithuanian Forest Brothers fought for so long and against so many enemies that their forces had fighters from every political persuasion.

Lithuanian Activist Front or LAF (Lithuanian: Lietuvių Aktyvistų Frontas) was a short-lived resistance organization established in 1940 after Lithuania was occupied by the Soviet Union. The goal of the organization was to liberate Lithuania and re-establish its independence. It planned and executed the June Uprising and established the short-lived Provisional Government of Lithuania. The Government self-disbanded and LAF was banned by Nazi authorities in September 1941. LAF remains controversial due to its anti-Semitic and anti-Polish positions.
