1989

The Tiananmen Square protests, known in Chinese as the June Fourth Incident (六四事件; liùsì shìjiàn), were student-led demonstrations held in Tiananmen Square, Beijing during 1989. In what is known as the Tiananmen Square Massacre, or in Chinese the June Fourth Clearing (六四清场; Liùsì qīngchǎng) or June Fourth Massacre (六四屠杀; liùsì túshā), troops armed with assault rifles and accompanied by tanks fired at the demonstrators and those trying to block the military's advance into Tiananmen Square. The protests started on 15 April and were forcibly suppressed on 4 June when the government declared martial law and sent the People's Liberation Army to occupy parts of central Beijing. Estimates of the death toll vary from several hundred to several thousand, with thousands more wounded. The popular national movement inspired by the Beijing protests is sometimes called the '89 Democracy Movement (八九民运; Bājiǔ mínyùn) or the Tiananmen Square Incident (天安门事件; Tiān'ānmén shìjiàn).

joke: "A large group of Russian soldiers in the border area are moving down a road when they hear a voice call from behind a small hill: "One Ukrainian soldier is better than ten Russians". The Russian commander quickly orders 10 of his best men over the hill where upon a gun-battle breaks out and continues for a few minutes, then silence. Furious, the Russian commander sends his next best 100 troops over the hill and instantly a huge gun fight commences. After 10 minutes of battle, again silence. The calm voice calls out again: "One Ukrainian soldier is better than one thousand Russians" The enraged Russian commander musters 1000 fighters and sends them to the other side of the hill. Rifle fire, machine guns, grenades, rockets and cannon fire ring out as a terrible battle is fought ... Then silence. Eventually one badly wounded Russian fighter crawls back over the hill and with his dying words tells his commander, "Don't send any more men...it's a trap. There's two of them.""

23-11-7 First Ukrainian Armored Vehicles Reported Crossing Dnipro River: The Ukrainian military has run recon patrols on the Dnipro’s left bank since May and sent Marine infantry detachments across the river in September. The first Ukrainian moves to land combat infantry with the mission to hold ground on the opposite, Russia-held side of the river were launched around Oct. 15. Now for the first time, Kyiv sent armored vehicles. Although the BTR-4 is amphibious, Ukrainian planners transferred the fighting vehicles to the east bank aboard a Soviet-era PTS-2, a tracked amphibious carrier designed to haul a single military fighting vehicle across water too deep to cross by driving.
